Abstrack
The issues of polygamy is widely discussed. People were got used to practice the marriage while at the same time the historical sides of the Prophet Muhammad why Prophet did, people were got used to use historical practice of prophet‘s polygamy as model to legitimate their intention. . this paper tries to further explores whether there are prophet‘s noble purpose on it. At the time of companions (disciples) of the Prophet, the Prophet had the limit of having only four wives, it could be at the time there are no more wars but the Prophet also ask people to be fair to the wives. Then the orientalist responses to the polygamous concept of the Prophet have reaped many criticism, some are pros and cons. Today, if you really want to follow the Prophet‘s marriage the ideal is to see the story when the Prophet struggle with the family of sakinah with Khadijah. Polygamy is also purposed to the widowers to alleviate widows and orphans as social problems. Prophet Muhammad actually is more direct to the concept of monogamy, because he does not want to hurt the heart of women. By looking at the historical side the author tries to explore the concept of polygamous. Prophets based on the basis of certain goals the how orientalist responses to polygamy and the role of the wifes who are reputed as a weak group towards a husband.

Abstrak
Persoalan poligami masih ramai diperbincangkan oleh masyarakat yang tak akan pernah ada habisnya. Sejatinya tidak ada perempuan yang ingin untuk dimadu. Melihat sebagian dari sisi sejarah Nabi Muhammad tanpa melihat latar belakang mengapa Nabi melakukan hal demikian menjadi alasan sebagai legimitasi poligami. Padahal, bila ditelisik lebih jauh lagi terdapat tujuan mulia dalam poligami Nabi. Pada masa sahabat peperangan, yang nantinya menjadi awal penyebab poligami Nabi, boleh jadi tidak sesemarak peperangan yang terjadi pada masa Nabi. Akan tetapi Nabi tetap mengisyaratkan bahwa poligami boleh dilakukan dengan membatasi jumlah –-empat— istri. Tanggapan kaum orientalis mengenai konsep poligami Nabi telah menuai banyak kritikan, ada yang pro dan kontra. Pada masa dewasa ini, bila ingin mengikuti pernikahan Nabi, maka contoh yang ideal untuk menuju keluarga yang sakinah adalah pernikahan Nabi bersama Khadijah yang penuh dengan perjuangan. Walaupun poligami dilakukan, itu ditujukan kepada para duda untuk mengentaskan janda dan yatim sebagai problem sosial. Nabi Muhammad sebenarnya lebih mengarahkan kepada konsep monogami, karena beliau tidak ingin menyakiti hati perempuan. Dengan melihat sisi sejarah penulis mencoba mengeksplorasi konsep Nabi berpoligami yang dilandasi dengan tujuan tertentu, tanggapan orientalis Rike Luluk Khoiriah terhadap poligami, serta peran istri terhadap suami, meski perempuan dianggap sebagai kelompok yang lemah.
