Abstract
Discourse on the fertlity in the study of hadith is an effort to integerate the words of the prophet with theories related to the issue. It is Important to be aplied as a way of meeting the era of history and contemporery era. Literal fertility traditions (hadith) indicate a suggestion to increase quantity of population. This meaning is
different when viewed from other perspectives. So that the recommendation of the hadith (fertility) and Malthus’ theory of population must be researched objectively. Departing from here, the use of hermeneutic theory Gracia functionalism was been as the basis thinking to interpret this hadith. With historical analysis and contextualization efforts, it is conluded that the prophet’s sugestion to multiply the population was the method of da’wah which marged with the culture of Arab society at that time. This way serves to inculcate egalitarianism and erode the culture of patriarchy among the people.

Abstrak
Diskursus fertilitas dalam studi hadis merupakan upaya integrasi antara teks dan teori-teori yang berhubungan dengan problem tersebut, dalam hal ini teori kependudukan Malthus. Hal ini dianggap penting untuk diaplikasin sebagai jembatan mempertemukan situasi historis dan era kontemporer. Teks hadis di satu sisi mengindikasikan anjuran meningkatkan kuantitas penduduk, di sisi yang lain penting untuk mengorganisasi pertumbuhan penduduk yang dipelopori oleh Malthus. Berangkat dari sini, pilihan teori hermeneutika fungsinonalisme Jorge.
J. E. Gracia dijadikan sebagai landasan berpikir dalam menginterpretasikan teks, teori dan realitas. Dengan analisis sejarah dan usaha kontekstualisasi maka disimpulkan bahwa anjuran nabi dalam konteks memperbanyak kuantitas penduduk adalah siasat dakwah yang berbaur budaya masyarakat Arab pada saat itu. Cara tersebut berorientasi menamakan nilai-nilai egalitarianisme sembari mengikis tradisi patriarki masyarakat Arab. Lewat argumentasi ini ditemukan hirarki nilia yang sama antara teks dan teori.
